Moone Boy Season 1

“That’s right buddy, just the right combination of destruction and caution”

Jmac:

This is another British import direct to Hulu, and this time Hulu Plus, so if you don't already have Hulu Plus, this may be a good reason to get it, or at least do the one month free trial. You can watch the first two episodes for free on Hulu, so you can try it out.

Moone Boy is about a young idiot boy in the west of Ireland and his imaginary friend who is a grown sarcastic man. It is set in Boyle, Ireland in 1989, which I'm not sure why, but maybe that will be revealed later. Kmac thinks it’s possibly a semi-true story about the show’s creator, Chris O’Dowd, who plays the imaginary friend. Being set in 1989 the show also has several historical puns, which made it even funnier for Kmac and me, as we both have history degrees..... maybe why we started this site; am I right? Martin’s (Moone Boy’s) family is also featured prominently without Martin or his imaginary friend, which gives the show a sitcom angle.

This show is just full of puns and funny Britishy lines, so if that’s not your bag, then you may not like it as much as we did, but it’s still a funny show. The 5th episode about an altar boy mafia is probably the funniest in my opinion.

Oh to be back in times that were simpler, when playing with yourself didn't mean playing with yourself.

I give it 4.8 jumpers out of 5.

Kmac:

You can tell when a series will be one of our babies; it’s why we are childless, and that we will end up arguing over who loves it the most. For the record I love Moone Boy, but I agree that Jmac love loves it more, so guess I’ll let him have at the full recap. Instead I have a few thoughts below:

* I’m glad that Chris O’Dowd, who played the cop love interest in Bridesmaids, is gaining attention from Hollywood.

* I thought the differences between this Irish comedy and British comedy was interesting. Moone Boy was still a bit dry, but it seemed to have a less biting tone. Think about it as the difference between The Office and Parks and Recreation.

* The boy who plays the main character is a treasure. He plays the character with a happy innocence that is often missing from child actors. It helps that the show has a similar innocence to it.

Pramface

Jmac:

I'll be honest, I saw the advertisements (ad-vert- tiss-ments = British English) for it on Hulu for at least a month before I thought, “ehhhh I’ll give it an episode or two.” Two things drew me to it; 1. the buddy comedy aspect of two bros taking care of a baby together, and 2. the sheer supercalifragilistic hotness of Scarlett Alice Johnson. I went into it thinking that is was so wholly British that only my anglofile friend Rebecca could ever enjoy it, and no red-blooded gun toting American could go for it...... well I was wrong.

The show only has two short (7 to 8 episodes as is the BBC custom) seasons (so far, Thank God!), which are all available for FREE on regular unpaid Hulu, as of June 13th 2013. This show, while based on the interactions of teenagers coming into college age, has something for everyone.... well everyone that won't get bent out of shape about mild cursing, or an acceptance of alternative lifestyles... which there is very very few of. Mainly, for American audiences, its just a British perspective of things, and if you just gave a shot you would realize we really are not that different.

The show revolves around Jamie who accidentally knocks up Laura after just meeting her at a party, and how their two groups of friends don't meld... at all, and how Jamie strives to be the model father, and ummm baby-daddy (which really a lot of chavs here and in Britain could learn from) all while not really being in a real relationship with Laura.

Jamie’s entourage consists of; his parents who are hilarious and really bring perspective to his life, Mike, Jamie’s idiot and faithful friend, and Beth, who holds a secret love for Jamie. Laura’s entourage consists of; her parents, who are dealing with their own relationship issues, and her best friend Danielle, who is to leave for university soon, and leave her best friend surrounded by hormones and nappies.

I have not shared any real spoilers in this review, and I urge everyone to watch this, if you want a real heartfelt comedy, that while goofy and funny, still deals with real characters and storylines that could very well connect close to home.

I give it 4.7 posh crisps out of 5.

It is simply brilliant and “like Narnia... but sexy” (inside show joke)

PS: I can totally relate to Jamie’s dad, as he struggles to look for a job... which are hard to come by these days.
