Wreck-It Ralph

Jmac Review:
Wreck It Ralph is all about a "bad" video game character trying to fit in, in a world where the "good" characters run everything and get all the rewards...... much like our own world. One day Ralph decides to leave his game to get a medal so that he will be respected in his own game/world. In so doing he puts several other games/worlds in jeopardy, and must go about fixing his mistakes with the help of friends both new and old. Wreck It Ralph is filled with humor for children and adults alike. Goofy little slap-stick for the kids and puns for the adults, that the kiddies won’t understand. The movie also has several actual homages to several real video games, that gamers everywhere... (well at least gamers that grew up with 8, 24 and 64 bit games) will love. An adult part of the movie is trying to find all the references to the games you loved as a child, at least if you're an 80s baby. With all this talk of video games, it is important to say that even if you have never played a video game, you will still greatly enjoy this movie... though it is all the more entertaining for gamers.
I give Wreck It Ralph and 4.6 power ups out of 5.
Kmac Review:
I love children’s movies. I have a husband who rarely tolerates my need to embrace my inner child. So when he went to shoot down my suggestion for Wreck It Ralph I was prepared...” you know its about video games don’t you?” We both grew up on old school consoles and Jmac is a gamer and I’m the definition of a casual gamer. Still I felt this movie on the inside joke front missed me a little. Fortunately I enjoyed the plot of the movie so much I didn’t mind the jokes I didn’t get. Ralph is an arcade villain in a world where the hero’s are celebrated everyday and the villains have an unappreciated day job. The worlds of the games connect through the power hubs the machines are plugged into. When Ralph goes out to try and win a medal and acceptance he is joined by a girl race character who is declined the chance to race but desperately wants to win. Underdogs and girl power will get me everytime. So if you have a passing acquaintance with video games and are a fan of good storytelling you will enjoy this movie, whether a kid or not.
I give this movie 4 out of 5 tries to beat the lava level on Aladdin, then go outside to play, no ones beating that one.
