Top of the Lake

Top of the Lake is a co-produced mini-series between the BBC and the Sundance Channel, set in New Zealand, which follows a police detective (Elisabeth Moss - Peggy from Mad Men) as she tries to find out first who raped the 13 year old girl, and then where the girl ran off to.

Like most British series it only has 7 episodes of an hour or so apiece, and at the end I feel like Abed on on NBC’s Community when his show that he has been watching is over...... I hope I find my own ‘Inspector Space-Time’ after this.... and no Lee Im am not watching Doctor Who!

The show is not as violent as other critics have said (Kmac said I would like it because its dark and violent), in all actuality it is very very dark but in terms of violence shown, there was very little, but don't let the kids or the teenagers watch this one.

Top of the Lake is a really superb who-done-it thriller, with twists throughout the episodes... most towards the end but each episode makes you reevaluate your own detective skills and what you thought was really going on. I have to give a shout out to myself for noticing a very small object and thinking “hmmmmm thats interestinnnnggg,” and even at the very end I still didn't have every piece of the puzzle put together.

The audio is a little low.... which is that same complaint I have about Mad Men, (which doesn't make sense because old people generally don't hear as well), but if you turn your tv up mid way you will be able to hear fine and be able to turn down the volume when actiony events happen.

If you watch this and I highly recommend you do, you will be kept guessing as to what connection will be made next, and since it is only 7 episodes you can blow through the whole series in a Saturday. I would advise against this of course because if you watch one or two a night it will stretch it out and give you that feeling of I can't wait to watch TV tonight...... something which American television has sadly lost as we move out of the second golden age of television and into, in my opinion mindless laugh track stupidity, as so many of our long running seasons are coming to an end this year and next.

The show actually ends on really messed up but sweet new version of family note... if that makes any sense, and you really should watch it.

I give it 4.6 lake ripples out of 5.

PS:..and no offense to her but the first time Elisabeth Moss has looked good to me. So cheers!

  1. This has been in my queue for some time but I just can't seem to pull the trigger on it. Now I will.
